Preparing for Lent
A Knight’s Guide to Sacrifice and Service
As Knights of Columbus, we are called to lead lives of sacrifice and service, and Lent provides the perfect opportunity to deepen our faith through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Lent is not merely a time of abstaining but a season to grow closer to Christ by imitating His love and humility. By intentionally embracing these three pillars, we can transform this sacred season into a journey of spiritual renewal and charity.
Prayer during Lent should go beyond routine. Set aside time each day to reflect on the Passion of Christ, perhaps by meditating on the Stations of the Cross or reading the Gospels. Commit to praying the Rosary with your family or brother Knights, asking for Mary’s intercession to remain steadfast in your Lenten commitments. Consider attending daily Mass or spending time in Eucharistic Adoration. These practices not only draw us closer to God but also set an example of devotion for others in our parish community.
Fasting and almsgiving are powerful acts of self-denial and love for neighbor. Fasting can include giving up a favorite indulgence or simplifying meals, but it should also inspire us to fast from behaviors that hinder our spiritual growth, such as impatience or gossip. Almsgiving invites us to share God’s blessings by donating to charity, volunteering at parish events, or assisting a family in need. As Knights, we can organize or participate in service projects, food drives, or fundraising for local causes. By embracing these practices, we become Christ’s hands and feet in the world, embodying the spirit of Lent as a season of renewal and grace.
