St. Joseph: A Model of Fatherhood and Patron of Our Parish
On March 19, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus and the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a man of faith, humility, and courage, St. Joseph has long been revered as a powerful intercessor and a model for Christian living. For the Knights of Columbus and the faithful of St. Joseph’s parish in Matamoras, Pennsylvania, St. Joseph’s example holds special significance, as he serves as the patron of one of our two parishes.
The Life of St. Joseph

Though Scripture offers few details about St. Joseph, his actions speak volumes about his character. Described as a “righteous man” (Matthew 1:19), Joseph accepted God’s call to protect and provide for the Holy Family. In the face of uncertainty, he trusted in God’s plan, guiding Mary and Jesus through moments of great difficulty, including their flight into Egypt to escape King Herod’s wrath.
St. Joseph’s silent strength, devotion to his family, and unwavering obedience to God’s will make him a powerful example for Knights of Columbus and parishioners alike. As the foster father of Jesus, he embodies the virtues of fatherhood, care, and selflessness that are central to our mission as Knights.
A Patron for Our Parish
As the patron saint of St. Joseph’s parish in Matamoras, he holds a special place in the hearts of the parishioners and the Knights of Columbus John Paul II Council 13935. His patronage reminds us of our duty to care for one another, to serve our families, and to protect the vulnerable. For the Knights, his example inspires us to act as spiritual fathers within our communities, offering guidance, support, and love to those in need.
St. Joseph’s connection to one of our parishes serves as a reminder that we are called to reflect his virtues in our daily lives. Whether through acts of charity, participation in parish ministries, or strengthening our own families, we honor his legacy by living out our faith with integrity and compassion.
A Model of Obedience and Trust
One of the most striking aspects of St. Joseph’s life is his trust in God’s providence. Faced with extraordinary challenges, he responded with humility and faith. His example encourages us to embrace our own vocations with trust, even when the path forward seems uncertain.
For the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph’s obedience calls us to follow God’s will in our lives and to be leaders in faith. By prioritizing prayer and discerning God’s guidance, we can fulfill our mission to serve the Church and our communities with dedication and humility.
A Protector of Families
St. Joseph is often invoked as the protector of families, a role that resonates deeply with the Knights of Columbus. As we work to defend the sanctity of life and strengthen the domestic church, we can look to St. Joseph as a model of steadfast love and sacrifice.
His example challenges us to nurture our own families, to support the spiritual growth of our children, and to care for those who are marginalized. By fostering strong, faith-filled families, we contribute to the vitality of our parishes and the broader Church.
Service and Labor
As a carpenter, St. Joseph reminds us of the dignity of work and the importance of serving others through our labor. The Knights of Columbus are called to be men of action, using our time and talents to meet the needs of our parishes and communities. Whether through charitable programs, parish projects, or community outreach, we honor St. Joseph’s legacy by working for the good of others.
An Inspiration for Knights and Parishioners
St. Joseph’s life offers a roadmap for living out the principles of charity, unity, and fraternity. His humility, strength, and devotion provide inspiration for the Knights of Columbus and the faithful of St. Joseph’s parish. As we celebrate his feast day, let us ask for his intercession, praying for the courage to follow his example and the wisdom to emulate his virtues.
May St. Joseph, the patron of our parish in Matamoras, guide us as we strive to live out our faith with integrity, love, and service. Through his intercession, may we continue to build strong families, vibrant parishes, and a culture that reflects the values of the Gospel.
